As a web-developer my life is appropriately filled with e-mails, instant messaging and texting.
It’s part of my job to dash off a quick note and press the ‘send’ button. Instant gratification.
Isn’t that the goal of today’s modern world?
I can’t remember the last time I sat down and wrote someone a letter.
Hand-written correspondence used to be an anticipated event. Who hasn’t waited impatiently for the mailman to arrive with a letter from a friend or family member? My cousin and I used to exchange letters between us as children. My mother kept stacks of letters written to her by my father during his four year tour in Korea. They were neatly bundled together and kept in a safe place. These letters were a large part of my youth and I can still recall how wonderful it felt to pour over each and every word time and again.
Today I received a note from Laurie Wagner Buyer. She and I started as business acquaintances. The relationship has since morphed into a good friendship, one I value highly.
I eagerly opened the envelope and read the details of her gardening and entertaining friends. It felt as if we were once again sitting at her kitchen table and sharing the little inconsequential tidbits of our lives. Inside the letter she had tucked a few newspaper clippings because the articles reminded her of me.
How long has it been since any of us read the newspaper with other people in mind and took the time to clip articles and mail them to someone?
Thank-you Laurie. You are truly a friend and a gift. You remind me that letter writing is quickly becoming a lost art.
I’m going to make a trip to the post office today to buy stamps and will be writing soon.
